Book Buzz: Faith, Romance, and Redemption
Enjoy faith-informed history, romance, and inspiration at October’s book buzz, where authors find common ground in faith, redemption, and the word of God. A Mourner of Swine, Walter Brown’s memoir of a small African village, raises searching and poignant questions. In The Rose and The Ring historical romances by Wenatchee Valley author Joyce Williams, God shows the path. And Triumph Born of Ashes tells the story of trooper Mike Buckingham, who emerged from flames, battling pain and disfigurement, to dedicate his life to educating and inspiring others.
Both a memoir and a meditation, A Mourner of Swine recounts the author’s experiences in Central Africa. It portrays the risks Brown faced and his terrible loss as he confronted a despotic leader. It offers an honest portrait of Brown’s doubts and questions, and of the deep faith that always returned his feet to the path. A Mourner of Swine invites us to eradicate apathy, reject radicalism, and expose the senselessness of toxic racism. It is a clarion call to connect with God with compassion and dignity, and embrace the individual triumphs of the heart.
Walter H. Brown is a native of Cincinnati Ohio. It was there that he enlisted in the US Navy. After his tour of duty, he received a Theology Degree from Simmons University. In Joyce Williams' The Rose and The Ring: Lady Veronika, charming, talented, wealthy, David Branden set his heart on having a good time while attending Charles University in Prague. But that was before Veronika, a maid at the boarding house, introduced him to Bethlehem Chapel, home of the Czech Reformation that took place a hundred years before Martin Luther. A spiritual awakening rearranges David's priorities, but how can he convince Veronika that being a penniless orphan does not disqualify her from being his choice for a wife?
When Veronika's odd little ring evokes a firestorm of anger, fear and desire for revenge in David's family, secrets of the past threaten to destroy her. Veronika must rely on God to show her a way to bring about healing and redemption.
