Ruta Sepetys Visits the Wenatchee Valley
#1 New York Times bestseller, international bestseller, and winner of the Carnegie Medal, Ruta Sepetys offers a free community discussion hosted by NCR Libraries. Sepetys' novels, Salt to the Sea, Between Shades of Gray, and Out of the Easy have won or been shortlisted for over forty book prizes, are included on over twenty state reading lists, and are currently in development for film and television.
Sepetys is considered a “crossover” novelist, as her books are read by both teens and adults worldwide. The internationally acclaimed, Lithuanian-American author of historical fiction has been published in over fifty countries and thirty-six languages.
Her Wenatchee event will focus on a discussion of Between Shades of Grey, and its about-to-release movie version Ashes in the Snow, which tell the story of a Lithuanian family living an ordinary life until Soviet officers invade their home, force them into a crowded train and enslave them at a Siberian work camp. The story is told through the eyes of 15-year-old Lina, who finds solace in her art and documents the events by drawing. Risking everything, she imbeds clues in her drawings of their location and secretly passes them along, hoping her drawings will make their way to her father's prison camp.
The daughter of a Lithuanian refugee, Ruta Sepetys is the first American crossover novelist to address both European Parliament and Library of Congress. She received the Cross of the Knight of the Order the President of Lithuania for her contributions to education and memory preservation, and was awarded The Rockefeller Foundation’s prestigious Bellagio Resident Fellowship for Salt to the Sea. Ruta is intensely proud to be Lithuanian, even if that means she has a name no one can pronounce. She lives in a treehouse in the hills of Tennessee.
