"I guarantee this will jog your thinking," says Bill McKibben. Fresh, vital, and free of ideological, right-wing/left-wing formulations, The Impulse Society shows the way back to a world of real and lasting good.

“Leavenworth author Paul Roberts’ new book The Impulse Society is a brilliant and thought-provoking look at our drive for instant gratification and the societal costs.” – The Seattle Times

America in the 21st century is much like a spoiled child who wants everything right now — quick profits, the latest smartphone, entertainment on demand — with no consideration of long-term costs or consequences. This is the withering appraisal of Paul Roberts’ brilliant and thought-provoking new work, which is sure to become one of the most talked about books of the year.

What sets Roberts apart as he considers income inequality, the polarization of politics and the incessant quest for better, faster technology, is his ability to integrate seemingly disparate observations (while drawing from more than 200 sources) into a coherent narrative that will have you nodding your head in agreement. He presents a powerful synthesis of current trends across many sectors — finance, labor, politics and health care.

Fresh, vital, and free of ideological, right-wing/left-wing formulations, The Impulse Society shows the way back to a world of real and lasting good.

“Roberts is calling us back from the brink." —E.J. Dionne, author of Our Divided Political Heart

“an apt description of our predicament and a welcome invitation to assert our humanity again." —Douglas Rushkoff, author of Present Shock

“smart, provocative, and timely." —Elizabeth Kolbert, author of The Sixth Extinction

“by turning the world on its edge, we may yet see it differently. The Impulse Society points the way"—Raj Patel, author of The Value of Nothing
