The North Cascades with Bill Dietrich & Bill Gaines
Probe the mysteries of the North Cascades with author Bill Dietrich and wildlife biologist Bill Gaines.
The North Cascades: Finding Beauty and Renewal in the Wild Nearby is for anyone who loves nature, the wild, and our own North Cascades: two-hundred breath-taking photos complimented by essays and profiles of a dozen people with intimate connections to this landscape. This coffee table photo and essay book, published in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act, both celebrates the “American Alps” in north-central Washington State, and urges new commitment to preserving and sustaining a 2.7 million acre ecosystem that includes some of the most dramatic terrain in the contiguous 48 states.
The lead essay is by Pulitzer-winning Bill Dietrich. Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, provides an introduction, and Pulitzer-winning Gary Snyder contributes poetry. Christian Martin profiles a dozen people with intimate relationships with these mountains—including Leavenworth’s Bill Gaines—and veteran trail-guide author Craig Romano suggests perfect hikes to experience firsthand. A dozen photographers share two hundred breath-taking photos of one of the most beautiful places on earth.
NY Times bestselling author and Pulitzer-winning journalist Bill Dietrich has written fifteen books, from prize-winning Northwest environmental texts to historical thrillers. Dietrich’s non-fiction has been widely used in university classes, with University of Washington Press reissuing his Final Forest, a sociological look at the Northwest timber wars. His fiction has made the NY Times bestseller list and sold into thirty-one languages. Says Dietrich: “like so many writers of the Pacific Northwest, geography, a sense of place, and the natural and human environment flow through my writing.”
Dr. Bill Gaines, a wildlife ecologist with Washington Conservation Science Institute, has worked on conservation issues for over 30 years. His current research focuses on large carnivores in the North Cascades, with an emphasis on grizzly bear recovery.
