In A Cowgirl’s Life in the Mountains, Lauralee Northcott braids together stories, songs, poems, menus and recipes from her 30-plus years as a horseback guide and cook in Washington’s Pasayten and Lake Chelan-Sawtooth wilderness areas. Lauralee captures human (and animal) behavior humorously and thoughtfully, recounting evenings where her cook tent and the camp became the space for sharing hearty dinners, reflecting on the day, getting better acquainted, and enjoying cowboy music. Focused and engaging, her experiences as an entertainer and a mountain horseman shine through. Perfect for anyone who loves the mountains, horses and the wilderness, A Cowgirl’s Life in the Mountains will teach readers practical wilderness tips, as well as the art of Dutch oven cooking and how to set up their own backyard “campfire”—a space to share a meal and a story, and the magic of the outdoors. As a member and principle songwriter for the Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band for 17 years, Lauralee has produced 6 albums. Her 2018 solo album, On the Loose and Headed Your Way, reached #1 on the Western Music Charts. Lauralee performs in cowboy poetry gatherings and festivals of all kinds. Lauralee was a public school teacher for over 30 years and spent her summer breaks working as a guide and cook for groups camping and traveling on horseback in the Cascadia region of Washington. Lauralee lives in Winthop, Washington, population 300, in the North Cascade mountains.
