Earth Week Poets Hirshfield, Lanham and Sheffield

Start:
04/26/2021 - 5:00pm to 6:30pm
Terrain.org celebrates Earth Day with poets J. Drew Lanham, Jane Hirshfield and Derek Sheffield, with moderator Alison Hawthorne Deming.
Jane Hirshfield, in poems described by The Washington Post as belonging “among the modern masters” and by The New York Times as “passionate and radiant,” addresses the urgent immediacies of our time. Ranging from the political, ecological, and scientific to the metaphysical, personal, and passionate, Hirshfield praises the radiance of particularity and reckons the consequence of the daily. Her nine poetry books include Ledger, The Beauty, long-listed for the 2015 National Book Award; Given Sugar, Given Salt, a finalist for the 2001 National Book Critics Circle Award; and After, short-listed for England’s T.S. Eliot Award and named a “best book” by The Washington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, and England’s Financial Times.

J. Drew Lanham is the author of The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature, which received the Reed Award from the Southern Environmental Law Center and the Southern Book Prize, and was a finalist for the John Burroughs Medal. He is a birder, naturalist, and hunter-conservationist who has published essays and poetry in publications including Orion, Audubon, Flycatcher, and Wilderness, and in several anthologies. An Alumni Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher at Clemson University, he and his family live in the Upstate of South Carolina, a soaring hawk’s downhill glide from the southern Appalachian escarpment that the Cherokee once called the Blue Wall.

When Derek Sheffield isn’t writing, teaching, or editing, he can often be found in the mountains of North Central Washington. He has published two acclaimed collections of poetry, Not for Luck and Through the Second Skin, and co-edited the anthology, Dear America: Letters of Hope, Habitat, Defiance, and Democracy. He is the poetry editor of Terrain.org.

Moderator Alison Hawthorne Deming’s most recent books include Zoologies: On Animals and the Human Spirit and the poetry collection Stairway to Heaven. Recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, and Walt Whitman Award, she is Regents Professor at the University of Arizona. She lives in Tucson and on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada. Her new nonfiction book A Woven World will be published by Counterpoint Press in August 2021.
