Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen
and Seth Grahame-Smith
Summary
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a parody novel by Seth Grahame-Smith. It is a mashup story combining Jane Austen's classic 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice with elements of modern zombie fiction. Grahame-Smith lifts much of the plot and text directly from Austen's public domain work, and credits Austen as "co-author "of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
Quirk Books editor Jason Rekulak called author Grahame-Smith "out of the blue one day and said, all I have is this title, and I can't stop thinking about this title: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. For whatever reason, it just struck me as the most brilliant thing I'd ever heard," said Grahame-Smith.
Grahame-Smith found Austen's text well-suited to zombification. "You have this fiercely independent heroine, you have this dashing heroic gentleman, you have a militia camped out for seemingly no reason whatsoever nearby, and people are always walking here and there and taking carriage rides here and there," he said. "It was just ripe for gore and senseless violence. From my perspective anyway."
Will Darcy and Elizabeth still fall in love, when household servants get eaten and bodies unearthed? Will Lady Catherine and her cadre of ninjas defeat Elizabeth in a battle to the death? And would it be unladylike for Jane to carry a musket? Don't be the last one in the graveyard to find out.
Rumors are circulating faster than zombies that Hollywood is bidding on this soon-to-be-blockbuster ... with Summer Glau rumored to be slated for zombie-destroying Elizabeth Bennett.

"What begins as a gimmick ends with renewed appreciation of the indomitable appeal of Austen's language, characters, and situations." — The AV Club
