The Lightning Thief
by Rick Roirdan

Summary

"Fast-paced, funny, exciting and thoughtful - my son and I love Lightning Thief and the entire Percy Jackson series. Ancient mythology summersaults off the page, made fun and accessible. Gripping adventure, real-life dilemmas, moral quandaries -- and ultimately a celebration of loyalty, responsibility, and families of all shapes and sizes. As popular with the girls at Osborn Elementary as it is with boys." — : Ten-year-old Raven Dawson and his Mom Jackie whole-heartedly recommend this book.

Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of school ... again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus's mater lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy, Annabeth, and tin-can-munching, goat-horned satyr Grover have just ten days to find and return Zeus's stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than discover the true thief: he must come to terms with that father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

A New York Times Bestseller and recipient of numerous awards including School Library Journal Best Book of 2005, New York Times Notable Book of 2005, Child Magazine Best Book of 2005, Chicago Public Library Best of the Best Book List, 2005, ALA Notable Book for 2005, and Pacific Northwest Young Readers Choice Award.
