Final Breath by Kevin O'Brien
Summary
Just days after they thwarted a shooting incident at their Seattle high school, two girls are murdered—their mutilated bodies discovered a mile apart from each other.
But they were mere substitutes, stand-ins for Sydney Jordan, a primetime TV news-correspondent. After the collapse of her marriage to a Chicago cop, Sydney tries to start a new life in Seattle with her teenage son. She doesn't know that someone needs to settle an old score.
One by one, the subjects of Sydney's human interest stories become human carnage: a Portland couple is murdered in what appears to be a random robbery; a paralegal plunges to her death from the window of a Chicago office building; and in New York, an aspiring screenwriter's strangulation seems the result a kinky experiment gone awry.
Only Sydney sees the connection to all these deaths. Only Sidney realizes she's a pawn in a deadly twisted game—a game that won't be over until she has taken her final breath.
