Translated from Icelandic, this mesmerizing winner of the 1955 Nobel Prize
in Literature deals with the struggles of two fiercely independent people,
a small farmer and his daughter, to survive and maintain their hard-won
freedom in the face of harsh realities and personal tragedy. At once
heroic and comic, bleak and touching, epic and deeply personal, this
powerful book will capture the reader’s imagination and memory. |

Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen
When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned
and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a
passing train, he enters a world of
freaks, grifters, and misfits, a
second-rate circus struggling to survive
during the Great Depression, making
one-night stands in town after endless
town. A veterinary student who almost
earned his degree, Jacob is put in
charge of caring for the circus
menagerie. It is there that he meets
Marlena, the beautiful young star of the
equestrian act, who is married to
August, the charismatic but twisted
animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an
elephant who seems untrainable until he
discovers a way to reach her.
Beautifully written, Water For
Elephants is illuminated by a
wonderful sense of time and place. It
tells a story of a love between two
people that overcomes incredible odds in
a world in which even love is a luxury
that few can afford.

Heart-Shaped Box
by Joe Hill
Open Heart-Shaped
Box and you'll instantly be caught in one of the most compelling,
truly terrifying books I have ever read. Ex-rock god Judas Coyne thought
he was buying a ghost on the internet, a strange addition to his
sinister collection. But the ghost is far more than he bargained for,
and soon Jude is haunted, hunted, and running. Desperate to escape
echoes of his past and an endless future following the night road where
the dead drive, Jude must confront the person he has become ... before
the dead catch up.
Gritty with the taste of modern America and characters so real they seem
to breathe beneath the pages, Heart-Shaped Box still manages to
ooze menace with every well-chosen word. A must read.

Neither
Here
Nor
There by Bill Bryson |
|
Favorite book? I
don't really have one but instead get hooked on an author or a category
of books. Bill Bryson's "Neither Here Nor There" is my favorite of his
books. We share a similar history of first flying to Europe (Amsterdam)
in the 1970's on the original "cheap flights" - about $125 one way!
This book is about him repeating the same route that first time 25
years later before he returns to the US to live. Anyone who traveled in
Europe when Frommer's Guides were "$25 A Day" or has lived in Europe for
a while will find themselves laughing out loud frequently.
